The young captain's usually striking bright blue eyes, lacked their usual boyish charm, looking exhausted today, as Starfleet as a whole was reduced to complete and utter chaos. His regulation transmitter had been beeping angrily since five yesterday, and he couldn't remember a time when it sat calm and still, not accusing him of raging careless failure. Right now, he stood in the newly reconstructed Daystrom Institute, his transmitter buzzing on the edge of the table, nearly about to fall off, while the captains and first officers of every vessel in the fleet, all spoke at once, in panicked tones, asking him the thousands of questions that he'd already tried asking himself but still couldn't answer. How many dead? Had the hyper-gravity device been faulty? How could Khan possibly know of the takedown? What was his next move? How many more would die? What could Starfleet do in terms of defensive maneuvers? How did Khan appear to be on course to fly over the desert when he so obviously was not? Yet, the one that plagued him more than any other was HOW that SOB escaped in the first place.

"Alright, alright, ENOUGH!" Kirk yelled out sternly, attempting to quiet the madness. He'd already talked to the newly appointed Admiral Pompous What's-His-Name, who'd felt comfortable enough in his promoted position to reprimand him like some kind of out of control problem child, spent a long and arduous night dealing with the head council, explaining the travesty, how the plan was intended to work, and fighting tooth and nail to maintain his command of the Enterprise, not to mention being assailed by the San Francisco Press every time he walked from one cacophonous meeting to the other. What he needed now was quiet, a chance to take a breath, and to not to be as blamed for this terrorist act as much as the terrorist, himself!!! Who the HELL am I? The guy's right hand man!?!? He felt like yelling out, ready to take a phaser to his transmitter at any moment. He also needed to get out of this DAMNED building!!! Yeah, sure it looked a little different, newly remodeled, new carpeting, but just being back here, he could feel it all happening again. The stunned screams as Khan swooped in on a hijacked transport shuttle, peppering the side of the building with laser fire, no one armed, all defenseless, Captain Pike, the closest thing to a father he'd ever known, dead on the floor, his clouded blue eyes still open anguished, looking up helplessly, tears mingling with blood streaked across his face. He couldn't stand it a moment longer.

"Ladies, and Gentlemen, Captains and Commanders, I understand your frustration, your pain, and I, more than anyone assembled here, know that a horrific wrong has been committed against Starfleet and must be repaid in full. However, lashing out at me, assaulting me with severe accusations, and thousands of questions I can't answer yet, is not going to aid in this investigation! This is an on-going investigation, meaning that it's STILL going on, and there are many things that we don't know yet. He took a deep breath, and looked back at them accusingly, trying to appear calmer than he felt. "I understand that you find it more than easy to blame me for what's happened. Yes, the entire Harrison Retribution Project was my own idea, my revelation, and came to fruition with the careful planning of myself and Commander Spock. In the ruins of this carefully planned, heavily researched attempt to end Khan's desolation, I have been called a devil-may-care, reckless, flyboy. If you think I take this failure lightly, well, you're forgetting that I  too, lost friends, and colleagues yesterday, and unlike the rest of Starfleet, I have to live knowing everyday that it was MY plan that got those people killed." He felt his own anguish rising, and he tried to shake it off, his eyes always seeming to find that spot on the groundwhere he watched his mentor die. His breathing was becoming quicker and shuddered in his chest. "I won't be taking any more questions today. I will, however, be giving a brief press conference later this afternoon with the admiral, when and if we know more information. Thank you."

Naturally, his closing remarks just sparked another torrent of responses and yes, more questions, but he gave the order for the meeting's adjournment, and quickly caught his transmitter, just before it fell to the floor. "Welcome to my every version of HELL," he whispered under his breath, attempting to maintain his composure as he felt a tap on his shoulder. "I've said all I'm going to say!" He replied, annoyed, as he turned around, coming face to face with the last Vulcan on earth he wanted to talk to right now. Spock looked at Kirk rather severely, his inquisitive brown eyes appearing deeply troubled. "Captain, I must speak with you. This matter is of the utmost importance, and requires immediate attention." Kirk sighed, exasperated. "Not now, Spock, I'm a little BUSY in case you haven't noticed! Didn't you hear? Our friend Khan," he said with gritted teeth, "Decided to play in the sandbox, and turn our device into an incinerating nuclear weapon!!!" Spock nodded. "Yes, Captain, Starfleet as an institution, has known no darker day than it did yesterday at approximately-"

"Save the speech for later, Spock. You're in just as much hot water as I am over this." Spock shook his head, looking perplexed. "Captain, forgive me, but my obligation to Project Harrison Retribution was to design a highly mechanized hyper-gravity device, that would generate a gravitational field strong enough to bring down the overtaken U.S.S Vengeance. As I have fulfilled this duty, with meticulous precision, I don't in any way foresee how the resulting, unexpected tragedy could be attributed as a fault of mine." Kirk rubbed the center of his forehead, feeling drained. "Because the stupid thing didn't work, Spock!!! This entire inception was a complete and disastrous failure. Don't you understand that!?!?" Spock shook his head again. "Illogical, Captain. The device is a marvel of modern technology. Our plan would have proved successful, if Khan had not destroyed the coolant stabilizers, which he would not have been afforded the opportunity to do, if he had not found out about the project ahead of time. The device works when utilized correctly. Our failure was not in the plan's inception, but in the execution."

Kirk pocketed his buzzing angry bee of a transmitter and looked back at Spock, derisively. "Thank you, Commander, I feel SO much better now, that that's been clarified." He pushed past his pointy-eared friend. "I don't have time for any of your "logic," right now, Spock. We screwed up, people died because of our mistake, and now I have to go meet with Admiral Pompous to draft a press release assuring the world everything's going to be okay, when it's NOT because that kill happy MANIAC is still out there!!!" James T. Kirk was seething now, furiously swiping his arm over the table, sending papers flying every which way. Spock watched Captain Kirk ball up his fists and bring them to his forehead in frustration. He decided to give him a moment to collect himself, before again speaking. "Captain, I am well aware of your situation, and your compromised emotional state due to the events of yesterday and our current position in The Daystrom Institute, the site of Captain Pike's passing, but THIS can be put aside no longer." Spock held up his pale slender fingered hand at eye level, and for the first time Captain Kirk noticed something was hanging from his fingers.

"Dog tags...... REALLY!?!? DOG TAGS!?!? My GOD Spock, I'm on the verge of some kind of mental breakdown here, with a million things to do, and you seriously come at me with DOG TAGS!?!?" Kirk looked at him incredulously now, eyes wild and manic. "I understand your initial confusion, Captain. These are the Starfleet Identification Tags of Cadet Allyssa Crystal. I recovered them from the crash site after a preliminary death count was being taken."

"You're unbelievable."

Spock pursed his lips in puzzlement, attempting to decipher the captain's meaning by this unfamiliar human phrase. "Thank you, Captain?"

Kirk threw his blonde head back again feeling exasperated. "It wasn't a compliment, Spock, not in the way I meant it. Of COURSE you found dog tags, that desert is littered with them, hanging around the necks of dead Starfleet Members that we couldn't protect, and- WAIT......... WHAT!?!? Cadet? What do you mean cadet? Spock, NO cadet was aboard either of those starships." Spock nodded gravely. "Correct, Captain. Which is why this matter requires your immediate attention. This instance is something that could get you into just as much, "hot water," as any rule breaking excursion you have previously endured. I am in effect, simply trying to protect the continuation of your captaincy, and make certain you are not harshly terminated from Starfleet, as you are my friend, comrade, and superior officer."

Spock had Kirk's full attention now, his tired blue eyes focused on the calm, cool, collected Vulcan intently, his mouth falling open just slightly from the shock of Spock's words. "Terminated? Why would I be terminated? Kirk felt his breathing becoming more and more shallow. If he didn't have a heart attack by the end of this, it'd be some kind of miracle. "Okay, Pointy, I want to know just what the HELL you're talking about. I've got 10 minutes, so talk and talk fast." Spock wrinkled up his nose. "Captain, I must reiterate my immense dislike for this derogatory reference regarding my Vulcan ears, and would request that you no longer use it when you're feeling angered, or in this case frightened by what I might have to tell you." Kirk nodded. "Alright, fair enough. You have my attention, Mr. Spock, now see if you can keep it."

Spock nodded, holding out the dog tags to Kirk, which he took, still skeptical of their importance, baffled as to how they could pose a threat to him, how they were  even recovered from the crash site at all. No cadet would've been anywhere near that warzone. "All evidence suggests, Captain, that Cadet Allyssa Crystal.......... is dead. In facing Khan Noonien Singh, despite her advanced training, and remarkable combat skills, Allyssa would have stood zero chance of survival. I understand, however, when assigning her to enact this mission, you had no prior way of knowing she would indeed come into personal contact with-"

"STOP. Right there." Jim shook his head in grave disbelief. "Spock, there HAS to be some mistake. Another explanation. No cadet is dead, because I would NEVER have assigned one, especially a first year, to go get my coffee, much less place expensive equipment in the burning desert during one of the most controversial and dangerous missions Starfleet has ever attempted! One that I put my own career on the line to get approved! Ill-freaking-logical. That'd be like sending a toddler into World War Ten. Check your records, because there's no way that girl is dead. I have a press conference, now, find me later, to let me know you've found her. She's probably off with her boyfriend somewhere, her tags got lost, she left them on one of the starships during a tour, I don't know, but I've got more important things to worry about right now than some kid!!!"

Jim went to push past Spock a second time, but Spock merely held up a glowing blue tablet, saying nothing. Jim looked at it with one eyebrow raised. "What's this? A notice that the admiral's cat's gone missing too?" Spock shook his head, ever the calm one. "This, Captain, is the official report in which you, personally, assigned Cadet Crystal, to place the hyper-gravity device and activate it." Jim squinted to better see the tablet, snatching it away from his first officer. "Impossible." Spock put his hands behind his back while Kirk's eyes darted back and forth, reading the report, looking more and more alarmed.

"I will admit, Captain, that I too found your personal choice for this assignment slightly peculiar...... However, upon reviewing Miss Crystal's records, training videos, and overall prowess as Starfleet's most accomplished female cadet to date, I saw what I assumed you saw as well. A young woman excelling in a predominately male profession, exceeding expectation, relentless to become the best of her class, that simply needed a chance to make herself known among her peers. She is not so unlike yourself, Captain. You were young, passionate, albeit misguided, but when given the opportunity, for Starfleet, you shone. I simply inferred Allyssa's achievements inspired you, the same way your pugnacity inspired Captain Christopher Pike. I began to think the choice wise, and well thought out. As it falsely seemed impervious to error."

Kirk's voice was horrified as he looked down at the tablet, slowly pointing to a place near the bottom, his lip quivering. "Th- that's my signature...... HOW can that be my signature!?!? I did NOT authorize this, Spock!!!! All that stuff you said, its well and good, but Spock, she's only in her FIRST year!!! She's a child still, GOD, no more than like twenty! I don't care if she's secretly an Amazon, I would NEVER place her in that kind of danger!!!"

"Allyssa Crystal was twenty-three years of age, Captain." Spock spoke quietly, and Kirk felt sick, taking special notice of the past tense. "Was. Because she's dead. He felt downcast, his broad shoulders heaving. "Dead because of me. I overlooked this, and let a twenty-three year old, bright eyed, brilliant girl get murdered in a place she was NEVER supposed to be!!!!" Spock was startled, the calm glass like surface of his brown eyes rippling, as Kirk yelled out in agony just then, hurling the official record tablet to the floor smashing it to bits, sending  the glowing blue glass to scatter. No matter what he did, no matter how hard he fought, he was always surrounded by this!!! Death, destruction, innocence lost. He was always at war. War with himself, war with the world around him, war with his friends just as much as his enemies. He was a one man army, and each war he fought, he lost.......

"I apologize, Captain. In this, I am not entirely faultless. I should have brought the matter to your attention as soon as the anomaly of the decision struck me odd." Kirk shook his head, feeling the transmitter in his pocket vibrate in strict reprimand. Spock shouldn't feel guilty just because he didn't hover and babysit his every decision. He kicked a piece of glass with his foot. "Damn it! I KNOW for a fact, I personally assigned Lieutenant Avery Mason to put the device in place!! A full fledged Lieutenant with ten years of on site mission experience, Spock, not Starfleet's Hermione Granger!!! Spock tilted his head curiously, not understanding the reference.

Panicked, Kirk tore out of the room, to the main access record computer, Spock hurrying after him. "I need to know who this girl is, Spock. Who would want to put her in harm's way. If she's so smart could she have hacked the systems herself, and changed the assignment? Did she die at her own hand or by someone else's? Who are her parents? Some targeted ambassadors from another planet? I'm going to get to the bottom of this, because it's NEVER happening again!" Furious, Captain Kirk was typing his codename and password to access the computer, his fingers striking the keys hard.

"Captain, it is my personal opinion that Miss Crystal did not hack our computer systems, though the evidence may suggest they could have been doctored sometime in the last month. The firewalls and encryption codes, as well as other security measures taken to insure the top secret information of Harrison Retribution were highly advanced, and could only be evaded by someone who aided in their creation. Also Cadet Crystal has absolutely no demerits on her academic record, no instances where she's shown any delinquent behavior in even the most mild of forms." Spock took the chair that the captain forwent, and Kirk shook his head, entering another series of passwords to get into the Starfleet Cadets Official Transcript Files. "Good girls go bad, Spock. Believe me, I know." Spock looked uncomfortable just then, and Kirk stood straighter speaking directly to the giant monitor. "Computer, this is Captain James T. Kirk requesting voice authorization for Starfleet Cadet File, 282602."

"Good Afternoon, Captain Kirk. Voice recognition confirmed. Accessing Cadet File 282602, Specification First Year, Name: Crystal, Allyssa J." Kirk smiled softly to himself as the serene woman's voice of the operating system granted his request. How sad was it that the computers were more hospitable than the humans these days. Kirk and Spock waited silently for the file to be uploaded, about to see the face of the young woman their negligence had just killed. An identification photo popped up with the smiling face of a sweet looking girl with bright green eyes, full lips, and long cascading brunette curls, proudly dressed in the scarlet of Starfleet Academy. All around the photo were links to training videos, grade information, physical and psychiatric reports, as well as professor comments. and personal information.

"Wait a minute!" Kirk exclaimed, quickly clicking on the picture to make it bigger. "I know this girl!" Spock cleared his throat uncomfortably with a knowing sideways glance. "Why does this not surprise me?" Kirk turned to look at him in sudden disgust. "Ughhh! Not like THAT, Spock! C'mon!!" Spock nodded, relieved. "I am pleased to hear it, Captain, but it should not astound you that it was my first assumption." Kirk tried not to smile. "Yeah okay, fair enough. What I MEANT though was, I've seen her around. Pike, actually. was the one who pointed her out to me, saying he'd never seen such a butt-kicking ray of sunshine in his life. I was supposed to give her an award at the end of year ceremony. I never even knew her name.......

The tears pricked Kirk's eyes, as he closed out of the picture and clicked on the personal information window. "She specialized in Navigation? Huh funny..... Pike thought it was combat. She's from Idaho, where the HELL is that?" Spock decided this was a rhetorical question and didn't answer. Kirk scrolled down to her parents names. "Rebecca Crystal, Mother. There's no father's name listed. No siblings either. All she has is her mom. Mrs. Crystal's probably going about her day, right now, unaware that her daughter's dead. Probably just ready and waiting for her to come home for the summer. She won't be coming home though....... ever again." He looked devastatingly at Spock, whose lip was twitching. "I can't write another one of these, Spock. I've been writing them all day....... I can't take anymore of this damn crushing guilt! I'm just one guy!!!"

Spock nodded understandingly and closed out of the file. "I know, Jim. I, myself, will inform Mrs. Crystal of her daughter's passing. We will find who hacked our data systems, we will honor our lost, protect our living, and we will sentence Khan Noonien Singh to a well deserved death. Together, we can beat him, Jim." Kirk nodded, glancing back at the open doorway to the conference room. "Captain Pike would've know what to do. He'd of been able to sort out this madness. I feel him here, Spock. I can't stay in this place any longer, you HAVE to get me out! I don't even know what I'm supposed to say during the press conference tonight with Admiral Pompous....."

Spock's brow knitted in confusion. "Strange, I believed our new admiral to be named Jensen Pommas." Kirk half smiled, a mischievous twinkle appearing in those eyes that had been darkened by the tragedy's never-ending night.  Oh this was going to be good. "No, no its Admiral POMPOUS, Jensen Pompous for sure." Spock nodded mentally altering the name in his mind. "Thank You, Captain, it would have been most grievous and of great embarrassment to me to call the admiral the incorrect name on a live broadcast." Kirk nodded along, oh yeah, that would've been brutal, and no worries buddy, I've got your back." He patted Spock's back, making him jump, still grinning.

"It was then another inquiry popped into his mind, and he felt his grin fading, leaving as quickly as it had come. "Who else knows about this, Spock? I'm assuming the admiral doesn't know, otherwise it would have made the rather stirring conclusion to his lovely little speech last night about what a total failure I've always been to Starfleet, and how I'll never live up to my father's accomplishments. After all.......even the most incompetent of captains never got a cadet killed!!!" He sighed in frustration, wondering if anybody in Starfleet history ever screwed up this bad. He pondered this for a while and surprisingly came up with an answer. Admiral Marcus, not even a comparison. He'd gotten way more people killed, and wasn't even sorry about it. Not to mention the small matter of unleashing Khan on the universe!!!

"As far as my knowledge concerning the matter extends, Captain, it is only myself who has this information. However, I would advise against any further concealment of this incident from Starfleet Officials and the press. The story will inevitably break and you will appear insensitive and callous for not "coming clean." Jim nodded. "You're right. The world wants answers, they have to know what happened, and I've got to be the one to tell them. Maybe we've got someone on the inside working for Khan. That's the only way this mess makes any sense."

Kirk felt his transmitter go off for the thousandth time today. He didn't want to answer any more calls. He wanted to wake up already, have this be some inconceivable nightmare. A thought drifted across his mind that made him sick to his stomach. What if it was the girl's mother? He sighed, guilt overwhelming his senses. He took her daughter away from her. The least he could do was answer the damn call. He pulled it out of his pocket and checked the caller identification. It wasn't Rebecca Crystal, but nevertheless he was so glad he'd decided not to ignore it.

He flipped open the buzzing transmitter, and held it to his ear as he plopped down in another chair. "Please, please, PLEASE don't be mad at me! Not today, not you!"

Captain Jamie Starfire's lovely laugh beckoned to his ears, and when she spoke he couldn't help but grin, feeling all the ugliness of the day smoothed away by the sweetness of her voice. "Why? What did you do this time, James Tiberius?"

Kirk smiled softly to himself as Spock scooted backwards very slowly on his wheeled chair, trying to get closer to better hear what was going on. Jim watched him amusingly. "Oh nothing much," he responded with a sigh, "Just came up with some half baked plan to take down a criminal mastermind, and put about a billion people in danger. Couldn't wait to use the T-Card, could you?" He could hear the smile in her voice, and he pictured her brushing back her honey colored hair as she said, "What else is new? And yes, it's time somebody kept you in line, Captain."

"Good. Because I'm so screwed up, I can't even see the line anymore."

Jamie's voice sobered very seriously, and Kirk could almost feel her hand on his shoulder. "Jim.... don't do this to yourself. None of this is your fault."

Kirk raised one eyebrow, surprised. "Wow...... no one's ever, and I mean EVER said that to me before..... Thank you J.J."

"That's Captain J.J. to you, Kirk." she laughed softly, and Kirk smiled rather sadly, wishing she was here, so he could gather her up in his arms, stroke a honey colored lock from her cheek, and cling to the one thing in his life that even made sense anymore. "I want to see you, Jamie, I need to see you. This chaos and killing.........it's starting to get to me. I've done something bad, Honey, something you can't even imagine. Kirk leaned into the transmitter, so Spock couldn't hear, his voice almost a whisper.

"You are going to see me in no less than half an hour, Jim."

Kirk smirked. "Are you asking me out, Captain Starfire? I like it when you take command, and you should know I'm incredibly hot for women that outrank me.

Jamie giggled, and Kirk could almost feel the rest of the burning world, slipping away. Spock was giving him a very reprimanding look, which made him smile. "Oh really? And just HOW many other women have you dated that outrank you, Captain?" she asked accusingly trying to sound stern, but failing. Kirk's smirk slipped into a pained expression. "Oooh ouch. Walked right into that one, didn't I?"

"Head on James T. Now, be serious and behave."

"You know THAT'S impossible. So are you coming to me, or am I coming to you?"

"You're coming my way, Jim, a Starfleet Hovercraft is speeding toward you as we speak."

"Nice, we're going in style! Are you going to wine and dine me, Miss Starfire? Show me off? Should I wear something sexy?"

"Hahaha we'll be wearing the same thing, actually."

Kirk made a face. "Hmmm that might be kind of embarrassing. Heels and halter tops. Not my thing."

Jamie giggled again, and Kirk leaned back in his chair, feeling relaxed for the first time in weeks. There was something so effortless about being with Jamie Starfire. What a name first of all! She was so beautiful with her tan skin, sweeping honey colored waves, and soft warm hazel eyes, and sweet smile. She was so funny too, and while he'd always thought dating a casual thing, y'know try all the flavors, all he ever had a craving for anymore was honey.

"No worries, Captain, we'll both be wearing our dress greys. Although the thought of you in heels on national TV creates quite the image, I must say!"

Kirk frowned. "National TV? No way! For your eyes only Starfire. Why the dress greys? Isn't five days a week enough in the drab fabs?

"Kirk, as much as it saddens me to say, this isn't a date...... I'll be assisting you in tonight's press conference. The admiral has been called away elsewhere, to the memorial they're planning at the crash site. I really want to talk to you afterwards, put your mind at ease about all of this, but then I've got to get back to the Supernova to test some experimental defensive equipment."

"I'm glad you're going to be there, Jamie. Spock's coming too." He leaned in even closer to his transmitter this time. "As far as he knows, Jensen's last name is Pompous, got it?

Kirk could almost see Jamie shaking her head, biting a pink lip trying not to laugh. "Another one of your classic pranks I assume? Do you ever go ANYWHERE without your Vulcan, Jim?

Now it was Kirk's turn to laugh. "Never leave home without him, Captain."

"Captain, may I just say this is a remarkable change in your usual mating habits." Spock said MUCH too loudly, and Jim turned to him horrified mouthing the words, "Spock, No!"

"In the normal course of your mating process, you tend to select multiple women, during any given time." Spock went on calmly, ignoring or perhaps enjoying Jim's mortification.

"Oh GOD no!" Jim tried his best to cover the receiver, but he could tell Jamie was, to his misfortune, listening intently.

"However, with Captain Starfire you seem to have broken your usual pattern, appearing to be exclusively pursuing her, as when this morning you took no action though approached by twin alien females, and one especially flirtatious Orion green skinned one. Not to mention the call from Miss Carol Marcus that you did not take during lunch."

"Spock, for the love of GOD, SHUT UP!" Jim hissed at his smiling Vulcan friend. "Captain Starfire, if you are listening you should feel most privileged, as never have I seen Captain Kirk resist feminine temptation in the past."

"Prepare to die, Pointy."

"You promised Captain that you would no longer use this offensive moniker. Also your frustration is unfounded as I am clearly commending you on your endeavor into uncharted territory. Fidelity."

Wincing, Kirk brought the transmitter back to his ear. "Jamie? Still....." he coughed nervously, "There, Sweetheart?"

"Oh yes. I found Mr. Spock's official report fascinating." She said teasingly. "I bet you're wishing you left home without him now haha!"

Kirk shot Spock a scathing glare. "You have no idea."

"Well don't fight, you know you'd be lost without him."

"No, I'd be lost without you."

"Awww! How many times have you used that one before?" she giggled.

Jim smiled, "Only once I swear! None of those other girls ever meant anything to me, J.J. I've forgotten the past. I'm looking into the future."

"Awwww alright, that was sweet. You should put fluent in flirting on your resume, Jim. The hovercraft will be here soon to pick you and Commander Spock up from Daystrom. Chin up, Cap. You're not fighting this war alone. We're here for you. I'm here for you." Her voice got so soft and loving, it gave Kirk chills.

"I'm happy to hear that, Captain Starfire. It's nice to know I'm not battling alone, and I can't wait to see you, J.J. We'll have to take a rain check on that date. Also, I'll try to leave the Vulcan in one piece."

"Yes, I think Admiral Pommas would approve of that decision."

"Admiral POMPOUS!"

"Haha oh right, I forgot! I love you, James T."

"Love you, Babe. Get me through this okay? That's an order."

"I outrank you, James! But I promise I will. Goodbye Handsome.

"Goodbye Starfire."

Jim slowly shut his transmitter, sure a goofy grin was spreading across his face. Pushing off his feet he slid backwards on his chair to ram it into the back of Spock's jarring him from whatever deep thought he had retreated into. "THAT was for embarrassing me in front of my girlfriend, Spock."

Spock smiled. "Ah, acknowledging your latest romantic conquest as your girlfriend, Captain, is evidence that your affection for Captain Starfire has over shadowed your chronic fear of commitment. I will venture to say your foray into fidelity might possibly prove successful.

Just then there was another buzz from a transmitter, but surprisingly enough, it was not from Kirk's. Spock looked down at his own transmitter, and Kirk grinned. "It's Uhura isn't it? Aha! Yes! Payback! You embarrassed me in front of my girlfriend, now I'm going to do it in front of yours. I might let it slip just how crazy you are about your sock drawer!"

Spock shook his head. "Of my scrupulous attention to organization, Lieutenant Uhura already knows. Regardless, this call is not coming from her recognized number. Spock flipped open his own transmitter and listened intently, looking, at first, grave and then uncharacteristically shocked. "Yes, yes, I understand the severity of this revelation, and shall relay the news to Captain Kirk, myself. Yes, Thank you, Mr. Scott."

Spock slowly lowered his transmitter, turning to Kirk, eyes wide in bewilderment, looking as Kirk had never seen him. To be honest it freaked him out, and the joking that had lightened the mood previously, turned instantly dark and cold. "Jim...... new evidence has been recovered from the archive in London. A time capsule was placed beneath the structure's foundation, that survived both the bombing and the alternate time shift. This is how Khan discovered and thwarted the plot against his life. In another time, we did it once before......."

Kirk felt chills seize his body, and the abnormality of Spock using so informal an address made him realize just how shocked Spock was by the news. "Oh my GOD. That makes sense....... He read about it, and the girl failing the mission, and knew EXACTLY how to turn our own weapon against us! He did the same damn thing he did before!"

Spock shook his head solemnly, his eyes looking into Kirk's. "No, Captain. The girl did not fail to bring Khan's ship down........ She succeeded."
"Death, destruction, innocence lost. He was always at war. War with himself, war with the world around him, war with his friends just as much as his enemies. He was a one man army, and each war he fought, he lost...."

LMFAO! Oh how I love Kirk and Spock's bickering!
